Wellness Checkups
Regular wellness checkups are pivotal in maintaining your pet's health by detecting any issues early and providing timely, preventive care.
A typical wellness checkup for a pet involves several steps to ensure the overall health and well-being of the animal. Here's what pet owners can expect during these appointments:
Check-In: Upon arrival, the pet owner checks in at the front desk, any previous medical records are collected. Dogs may be weighed at check in, while cats are weighed during the assessment.
Initial Assessment: Our veterinarian will meet with you and your pet to go over a history, including any changes in behavior, diet, or health concerns since the last visit. They will also check the pet's weight and vital signs (temperature, pulse, and respiration rate).
Physical Examination: The veterinarian conducts a thorough physical exam, which typically includes:
- Eyes, Ears, and Mouth: Checking for signs of infection, dental issues, and overall health.
- Skin and Coat: Examining for parasites, lumps, or skin conditions.
- Heart and Lungs: Listening with a stethoscope to check for abnormal breathing sounds and heart murmurs.
- Abdomen: Palpating to assess for abdominal pain, any overt masses or abnormalities.
- Musculoskeletal System: Assessing joints, muscles, and overall movement
Vaccinations and Preventive Care: The vet reviews the pet’s vaccination schedule and administers any necessary vaccines. Preventative parasite prevention may also be discussed and pending lifestyle factors (doggie daycare, dog parks, travel) will provide recommendation for flea and tick prevention, deworming and heartworm prevention.
Diagnostic Testing: Depending on the pet's age, breed, and health status, the vet may recommend blood tests, urinalysis, fecal parasite test, or other diagnostics to screen for underlying conditions.
Nutritional and Lifestyle Advice: The veterinarian offers advice on diet, exercise, and overall lifestyle to maintain the pet’s health. They may recommend dietary adjustments or supplements based on the pet’s needs.
Behavioural Consultation: Any behavioural concerns or changes are discussed, and the vet can provide guidance or refer to a behavioural specialist if needed.
Discussion and Q&A: The veterinarian takes time to answer any questions the pet owner may have and discuss any concerns about the pet's health or behaviour.
Follow-Up and Record Keeping: The visit is documented in the pet’s medical records, and any follow-up appointments or additional treatments are scheduled as necessary.
Check-Out: The pet owner receives a summary of the visit, including any treatment provided and recommendations for home care. Payment and scheduling for the next wellness checkup or follow-up are handled at the front desk.
Visit Frequency
The frequency of wellness check-ups for cats and dogs varies depending on their age, life stage, and breed-specific needs. Here are general recommendations:
Puppies and Kittens (Birth to 1 Year)
Frequency: Every 3-4 weeks until they are about 16 weeks old.
Focus: Vaccinations, deworming, growth monitoring, and early detection of congenital issues. Guidance on diet, behaviour, and socialization is also provided.
Adult Cats and Dogs (1 to 7 Years)
Frequency: Once a year.
Focus: Annual physical exams, vaccinations, parasite prevention, dental check-ups, and screening for common health issues. Nutritional and behavioural advice is also given.
Senior Cats and Dogs (7+ Years)
Frequency: Twice a year.
Focus: More frequent health screenings to monitor for age-related conditions such as arthritis, kidney disease, diabetes, and cancer. Dental care, weight management, and adjustments in diet and lifestyle are also emphasized.
Other Considerations
Breed-Specific Considerations
Some breeds may require more frequent check-ups due to predisposition to specific health issues. For example, brachycephalic breeds (like Bulldogs and Pugs) may need regular respiratory evaluations, while large breeds (like Great Danes and German Shepherds) might need frequent joint health assessments.
Special Health Needs
Pets with chronic health issues or those on long-term medications may need more frequent visits to monitor their condition and adjust treatments as necessary.
Always consult with your veterinarian for personalized recommendations based on your pet’s specific needs.
